Patchouli is a species of plant from the genus Lamiaceae. It is a bushy herb of the mint family, with erect stems, reaching around 75 centimetres ( 2.5 ft ) in height and bearing small, pale pink-white flowers. The plant is native to tropical regions of Asia.

Patchouli oil is produced by distillation, either with steam or high pressure steam. Pogostemon cablin is considered superior among its species. Extraction of patchouli essential oil is by steam distillation. Leaves are harvested several times a year, and where dried may be exported for distillation. Some sources claim highest quality oil is usually produced from fresh leaves distilled close to where they are harvested.
